When I try to start Tor I get an error message in Vidalia's message log ... 1.General ========= 1.1 What is Vidalia? -------------------- Vidalia is a GUI for Tor, making it easy for you to run, monitor, and configure your installation of Tor. It lets you start and stop Tor, as well as letting you know when things go wrong. Vidalia also lets you see how much bandwidth Tor is using and can even help you set up your own Tor server. 1.2 Does Vidalia run on my operating system? ------------------------------------------- Vidalia is a cross-platform GUI built using the Qt GUI toolkit. Vidalia should run on any platform supported by Qt, which includes (but is not necessarily limited to): * Windows 95/98/Me, NT4, 2000, XP, and Vista * Mac OS X Panther (10.3), Tiger (10.4), and Leopard (10.5) * Linux or other Unix variants running the X Window system. 1.3 How can I find out when new Vidalia releases are available? --------------------------------------------------------------- Vidalia is still under active development and we tend to put out a new release approximately every 1-2 months. You can subscribe to our Trac RSS feed to learn when we have put out a new release. We also announce new releases on our homepage and on our download page. 1.4 Where can I get additional support for Vidalia? --------------------------------------------------- First, read through this FAQ and also search the documentation on our wiki. If you prefer IRC, you can find us in #vidalia on irc.oftc.net. Otherwise, we have a vidalia-users mailing list set up for Vidalia users to help out and answer each others' questions. 2 Running ========= 2.1 I installed Vidalia/Tor/Privoxy. Now what? ---------------------------------------------- Now you need to configure your applications to send their traffic through Tor. Scott Squires has created an extension for Firefox called Torbutton that lets you easily toggle your browser's use of Tor. You might also check out FoxTor for a similar Firefox extension. See the Torify How-To for information on configuring several other applications to use Tor. The Tor documentation for Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux/BSD/Unix might be useful for you, as well. 2.2 Can I run Vidalia from a USB drive? --------------------------------------- Yes! You can run Vidalia from a USB drive, perhaps for a portable Tor/Vidalia/Polipo or Tor/Vidalia/Privoxy combination, by using Vidalia's -datadir command-line argument. The -datadir argument tells Vidalia where you would like it to store all of its configuration and application data. For example, you might have a batch file on your USB drive that starts Vidalia as follows: vidalia -datadir "." The above line would tell Vidalia to use the current working directory as its data directory. You can also configure Vidalia to look for a Tor executable and configuration file (torrc) on your USB drive using Vidalia's Settings dialog or editing Vidalia's configuration file (vidalia.conf). If you want to run the Windows version of Vidalia from a USB drive, you may also need to copy mingwm10.dll from a Vidalia or MinGW package onto your USB drive in the same directory as vidalia.exe. 2.3 Can Vidalia "attach" to an existing Tor process? ---------------------------------------------------- Yes. Before Vidalia starts its own Tor process, it always first checks to see if it can connect to the control port of an existing Tor process. All you need to do is enable a control port on the Tor you already have running, and Vidalia will connect to it instead of starting its own Tor process. You first need to open your `torrc` in a text editor. Then, add the following line on a line by itself anywhere in your torrc: ControlPort 9051 You will also likely want to set a password for your control port to limit what applications are allowed to connect to it. To do so, you first need to open up a terminal or command prompt and run the following command (you may need to cd to the location of your Tor executable): # tor --hash-password mypassword Replace "mypassword" with whatever password you would like to use for your control port. The last line of output from the above command will contain a string that starts with "16:" and is followed by a long string letters and numbers. This string is a hash of the password you supplied as an argument to the --hash-password command above. Copy this entire string, and then add a HashedControlPassword line to your torrc similar to the following: "HashedControlPassword 16:816172DEB125A9CA603A6A8A5C16D0642DA4556E4EC417E6B9AAC9AF0D" Save your torrc changes and either restart or "HUP" your Tor process to reload your configuration. Then you can click 'Start Tor' in Vidalia, which will connect to your Tor process and then prompt you to enter your original control password ("mypassword" in the example above). 2.4 Why do I see connections to geoip.vidalia-project.net in my network map? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vidalia 0.0.5 added a network map feature that lets you see where in the world your traffic is going. To be able to map Tor relay IP addresses to approximate geographic locations, we use the GeoLite City database from MaxMind. Unfortunately, the database is around 24MB and shipping it alongside the Vidalia binary would be unreasonable. Consequently, we host the database on our servers and created a small perl script interface to it, allowing Vidalia clients to query the database via standard HTTP GET or POST requests. All communication between Vidalia and our servers is done over Tor, so our servers do not know who is making the requests. Additionally, no identifying information is included in the requests. Of course, you can verify this by looking at the source code, such as geoipresolver.cpp and torsocket.cpp. We also have a specification for the format of our geographic information requests and responses. 2.5 Can I run a relay without worrying about abuse complaints? -------------------------------------------------------------- Tor relay operators can specify which services and/or ports clients are allowed to access from their relay. From Vidalia's Exit Policies tab, you can select what services you want to allow clients to access from your relay. Vidalia's help documentation explains what each exit policy option means. By default, Tor relays allow access to many popular services, but restricts some (such as port 25) due to the potential for abuse. Tor's FAQ has more information for relay operators on how to avoid abuse complaints. Rather than running a normal, public Tor relay, you might also consider running a bridge relay. Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) attempt to prevent users from accessing the Tor network by blocking connections to known Tor relays. Bridge relays (or bridges for short) are relays that help these censored users access the Tor network. Unlike other Tor relays, bridges are not listed in the same public directories as normal relays. Since there is no complete public list of them, even if your ISP is filtering connections to all the known Tor relays, they probably won't be able to block all the bridges. 3 Common problems ================= 3.1 When I try to start Tor I get an error message in Vidalia's message log that says, "Failed to parse/validate config: Failed to bind one of the listener ports." What's that mean? ----------------------- This error message typically means you already have a Tor process running that does not have an open control port. When Vidalia tried to start its own Tor process, Vidalia's Tor process conflicted with your existing Tor process. On Windows, you can look in your Task Manager for a process called tor.exe, select it, and then click "End Process" to terminate your Tor process. On most other operating systems, the ps and kill commands can help you find and terminate your existing Tor process. Then you can simply click 'Start Tor' in Vidalia, and Vidalia will start a new Tor process with the necessary arguments that allow Vidalia to communicate with and control Tor. If you would like Vidalia to connect to your existing Tor instead of starting a new Tor process, see the FAQ entry above on configuring a control port and password for your existing Tor process. debian/apparmor-profile0000644000000000000000000000064212143444455012400 0ustar #include /usr/bin/vidalia { #include #include /usr/lib/** mr, owner @{HOME}/.vidalia/ rw, owner @{HOME}/.vidalia/** rwmk, /{var/,}run/tor/control rw, /{var/,}run/tor/control.authcookie r, /usr/share/icons/*/index.theme k, # Site-specific additions and overrides. Many thanks to intrigeri for providing this great patches! -- Ulises Vitulli Fri, 22 Jun 2012 07:18:44 -0300 vidalia (0.2.17-1) unstable; urgency=low A known bug has been introduced at this release point (in fact it was on 0.2.16, see below), which produces a little undesired effect on very particular configuration sets. . Bug description: If you use Vidalia to control Tor and change Tor's config but Vidalia's saveconf attempt fails (e.g. because Vidalia is controlling the system Tor and it can't write to /etc/tor/torrc, which is default), then Vidalia will tell Tor to quit reloading its torrc on hup. . This is a feature by its own, because now the changes Vidalia made won't be silently overwritten at daily's Tor logrotation, but it's a bug too, because if you logrotate before hupping, Tor won't open any new logs. . /As a resume/, this translates into an undesired effect on Tor's logging capacity, but it's highly unlikely this will affect any of your privacy properties at any point. . See upstreams's bug report at: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/5095 . For the curious, there was indeed a 0.2.16 upstrem release, which differs from the version you're now at by just a little policy change on Vidalia's user interface translations. -- Ulises Vitulli Sat, 11 Feb 2012 22:26:58 -0300 vidalia (0.2.14-2) unstable; urgency=low As #552556 got solved up through the years, really great news come up today . Having "Control Socket" enabled by default on Tor package lets us to turn to almost zero configuration required for Vidalia users to run Tor . This means we are be able to speak, through a local Unix socket, with Tor directly with no extra authentication required . Although this could appear to be frightening, basic POSIX permissions are still required to access this socket, which, except in the case you screw up your system, is pretty fair . To put things into perspective, most of all services on your system, even the more sensible ones, have been secured this way over many decades, so don't get stressed out! :-) . Kudos to Weasel&&everyone involved in this awesome goal. -- Ulises Vitulli Sat, 03 Sep 2011 15:47:23 -0300 debian/docs0000644000000000000000000000002312102343420010023 0ustar CREDITS debian/FAQ debian/menu0000644000000000000000000000036712102343420010052 0ustar ?package(vidalia):needs="X11"\ hints="Vidalia,Tor,Routing,Network Routing,Anonymous,Kde4,Onion"\ section="Applications/System/Security"\ title="Vidalia-Tor Onion Routing GUI"\ command="/usr/bin/vidalia"\ icon="/usr/share/pixmaps/vidalia.xpm" debian/control0000644000000000000000000000257012143444455010603 0ustar Source: vidalia Section: net Priority: extra Maintainer: Ulises Vitulli Uploaders: Vern Sun , intrigeri Build-Depends: debhelper (>= 6.0.7~), dh-apparmor, autotools-dev, libqt4-dev (>= 4.1.0), po-debconf (>= 1.0), cmake (>= 2.4.8), libssl-dev (>= 0.9.8g), dpkg-dev (>= 1.16.1.1~) Standards-Version: 3.9.4 Homepage: https://www.torproject.org/projects/vidalia Vcs-Git: git://git.debian.org/collab-maint/vidalia.git/ Vcs-Browser: http://git.debian.org/?p=collab-maint/vidalia.git Package: vidalia Architecture: any Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}, debconf (>=1.5.11) | debconf-2.0, ucf, adduser, tor (>= 0.2.2.29-beta-1) Suggests: iceweasel-torbutton, apparmor Description: controller GUI for Tor Vidalia offers a graphical user interface to start and stop Tor, view its status at a glance, and monitor its bandwidth usage. . This is recommended and Debian's default configuration. Only two (even only one) steps are required to be performed: 1. Answer debconf question at Vidalia's config/upgrade time with the proper user/list of users that you'll allow to connect/configure/monitor your local instance of Tor, and, 2. If the user/any of the users from the list below is currently logged in, he/she will have to restart his/her X session before starting Vidalia. That would be all! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is default and recommended configuration because the bast majority of the users will find here the most suitable choice for a local Tor daemon. Please keep reading for further explanation ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Debian Security Enhancements ============================ The first new feature on Vidalia is a general-purpose set of code compiler enhancements that at both, compile and run time, intend to provide security protection feature. In a nutshell, it helps Vidalia software to be more resistant to memory corruption attacks. This attacks are very easy to find on untrusted third party data coming from the network, data that could have been forged to look like Tor's but associated to malicious remote attacker. The second one is a security profile for AppArmor, a mandatory access control software that confines processes to certain resources. The basic idea behind AppArmor is that you lock an application to a certain minimal well-known predefined list of resources, making certain amount of attacks to be unable to succeed. Please note that this AppArmor profile is prepared to cover only the "default's installation" scenario, in which you use a system's wide Tor instance started by regular Tor init scripts (this configuration is described above as "Default Configuration: Simplest and Painless"). Any other role is not supported, mainly because of the complex amount of scenarios you may find to run Vidalia. Note that this AppArmor profile is of no use unless AppArmor is enabled system-wide, which is not the case by default on Debian Wheezy. For more information about testing / using AppArmor on Debian, see https://wiki.debian.org/AppArmor Sadly enough, current status of AppArmor on Debian Unstable is broken when using stock kernels (Check out status on #676515). The 'But...' Scenarios ====================== On the other hand, there could be a few situations in which you wont be able to use this configuration profile, some of them being: - You couldn't convince an admin to add you into the list of local system users allowed to control Tor - The Tor instance you're willing to control runs on a remote host - Some old manuscripts have been recently revealed vulnerabilities on the unixsocket implementation, or simply you just don't wish to use it because you dislike the word 'unix' on 'unixsocket'. In this cases, or whichever ones you may find, you can still make use any of the following alternatives: 1. If facing a local Tor daemon situation in which you are unable to connect for some reason to the system-wide Tor's Control Socket (as the example explained below), you can still launch a personal Tor session and manually configure Vidalia to use it. 2. Enable Tor's ControlPort and enable CookieAuthentication in Tor's config, then grab the cookie file from /var/lib/tor/control_auth_cookie, profit! 3. Enable Tor's ControlPort, get a hashed password at 'tor --hash-password', load back the output into the HashedControlPassword Tor's config field, profit! 'Two Tor instances on the same machine' Issue ============================================== Be aware that if you choose to connect to Tor using a different method that Debian's default, you'll be hitting a bug on Vidalia. This will also happen if you have two instances of Tor running on the same maching. See https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/4823 and http://bugs.debian.org/654644 for more information. Detailed description --------------------- Vidalia provides a graphical graphical user interface to configure different aspects of the Tor Network, check its status at a glance, monitor its bandwidth usage or maybe just view Tor's event logs. This means that Vidalia needs to talk to the Tor daemon. If for some reason you decide/are forced not to go by the default profile which configures everything for you at Vidalia's installation time, you may use any of this different approaches to have Vidalia and Tor working. 1. Launch your own personal Tor session ------------------------------------ *********************** FOR PARANOIDS ONLY *************************** | | | | | In the remote and unlikely event of a bug existing in the | | Tor routing algorithm or implementation itself, it might be | | _relatively_ easy, or at least possible, for a remote user to | | gain access to the data of the user launching Vidalia. | | | | | | This will be much more difficult if you run Vidalia using | | either of the two alternatives described below. | | | | | | ** Please consider using them if possible! ** | | | | | *********************** FOR PARANOIDS ONLY *************************** Required Steps: # Start your own personal Tor session binary, create proper paths: $ mkdir ~/.tor $ chown $USER. ~/.tor && chmod go-rwx ~/.tor $ /usr/sbin/tor ControlSocket ~/.tor/socket SocksPort $RANDOM ControlPort 0 # Make a note on the $RANDOM port it has used. You'll see something like: Feb 13 12:28:20.819 [notice] Tor v0.2.2.35 (git-73ff13ab3cc9570d). This is experimental software. Do not rely on it for strong anonymity. (Running on Linux x86_64) Feb 13 12:28:20.820 [notice] Initialized libevent version 2.0.16-stable using method epoll. Good. Feb 13 12:28:20.820 [notice] Opening Socks listener on 127.0.0.1:3771 In this case, 3771 is your lucky number and you'll use it as socks port for your favourite browser network preferences, polipo or privoxy, etc. # Launch Vidalia process. It will fail trying to start, because it's unable to connect or because some other reason. # Manually configure your Vidalia instance: # Go to "Settings" # Click on "Advanced" icon # At "Tor Control" block, choose "Use Unix domain socket (ControlSocket)" # Set "Path" to "/home/$USER$/.tor/socket" and click on "OK" # Now click on "Start Tor" and enjoy! :-) 2. Enable Tor to use a control cookie to communicate with Vidalia. --------------------------------------------------------------- * The best password is the one you don't have to know about * This method consists of a password-less authentication. This means you won't have to remember any password, but you'll have to grab a very important and *SECRET* file from disk, called "Auth Cookie". To enable this profile, edit Tor's configuration file, by default at '/etc/tor/torrc', add or uncomment both the 'ControlPort' and the 'CookieAuthentication' options, setting the last one to 1. You will end up having something like this: # egrep '(ControlPort|Auth)' /etc/tor/torrc ControlPort 9051 CookieAuthentication 1 Now start/reload/restart the Tor daemon, and start Vidalia (as a regular X user). Vidalia will ask you for a "cookie file" at the next run: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ You will have to fetch the "cookie file" from your local filesystem, by default at '/var/lib/tor/control_auth_cookie' DO NOT share this file with anyone, Tor's privacy depends on it! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This option might be simpler than all the others, but will require you to grab a different cookie file every time you restart the Tor process, in contrast to the next methods. This is my preferred and recommended method, simple and easy, no passwords. 3. Enable Tor to use a control password to communicate with Vidalia. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Edit the Tor configuration file, by default '/etc/tor/torrc', add or uncomment both the 'ControlPort' and 'HashedControlPassword' options and load 'tor --hash-password' hash got from the output into it, as shown below: # tor --hash-password SOME_PASSWORD_HERE Sep 17 18:48:49.421 [notice] Tor v0.2.0.30 (r15956). This is experimental software. Do not rely on it for strong anonymity. (Running on Linux x86_64) 16:167F667A98F859D2600BD708B48B95343FEF7800B479E2AA4284ACF029 You will end up with something like this: # grep Control /etc/tor/torrc ControlPort 9051 HashedControlPassword 16:167F667A98F...4ACF029 Now start/reload/restart the Tor daemon, and start Vidalia (as a regular X user). Vidalia will ask you for the set password ('SOME_PASSWORD_HERE' as for the example) at the next run and it will start using a secure authentication. Last Minute Notes (Quoted from debian/NEWS) =========================================== A known bug has been introduced at this release point (in fact it was on 0.2.16, see below), which produces a little undesired effect on very particular configuration sets. This is a feature by its own, because now the changes Vidalia made won't be silently overwritten at daily's Tor logrotation, but it's a bug too, because if you logrotate before hupping, Tor won't open any new logs. /As a resume/, this translates into an undesired effect on Tor's logging capacity, but it's highly unlikely this will affect any of your privacy properties at any point. See upstreams's bug report at: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/5095 For the curious, there was indeed a 0.2.16 upstrem release, which differs from the version you're now at by just a little policy change on Vidalia's user interface translations. -- Ulises Vitulli Sun, 12 Jun 2012 19:21:02 -0300 debian/vidalia.desktop0000644000000000000000000000020212102343420012153 0ustar [Desktop Entry] Type=Application Exec=vidalia Name=Vidalia Icon=vidalia GenericName=Tor GUI Terminal=false Categories=Qt;Network; debian/postrm0000644000000000000000000000025612102343420010427 0ustar #!/bin/sh set -e if [ "$1" = "purge" ]; then rm -f /etc/default/tor.vidalia if [ -x "/usr/bin/ucf" ]; then ucf --purge /etc/default/tor.vidalia fi fi #DEBHELPER# debian/source/0000755000000000000000000000000012102343420010455 5ustar debian/source/format0000644000000000000000000000001412102343420011663 0ustar 3.0 (quilt) debian/patches/0000755000000000000000000000000012102343420010604 5ustar debian/patches/debians-tor-binary-path.patch0000644000000000000000000000143612102343420016254 0ustar Author: dererk Description: Even though upstream has implemented a block of code to perform this check, as Tor's binary is located in /usr/sbin path, regular users are likely to lack that path in their PATH enviroment variable.
